Closed combustion fireplaces in Cape Town: the complete guide

A closed combustion fireplace burns wood inside a sealed firebox behind a glass door, with air supply you control. It puts far more heat into the room than an open fireplace and uses a fraction of the wood. Here is what Cape Town homeowners should know before installing one.

What is a closed combustion fireplace?

In an open fireplace most of the heat disappears up the chimney along with warm room air. A closed combustion unit seals the fire behind heat-resistant glass and draws its air through controllable vents, so the fire burns slower, hotter and cleaner.

Typical efficiency is 70 to 80 percent against roughly 15 percent for an open hearth. For a Cape Town winter that means a warm lounge on two or three logs an evening instead of a bag of wood.

  • Sealed firebox with controllable primary and secondary air
  • Radiant heat from cast iron or steel, plus convected warm air
  • Far less smoke and soot in the room
  • Safer around children and pets than an open fire

Installation requirements in Cape Town homes

The flue does most of the work. It must be the correct diameter for the unit, insulated where it passes through the roof, and finish high enough above the roofline to draw properly in Cape Town's wind. Older Bellville and Durbanville homes often have an existing chimney that can be relined rather than rebuilt.

Clearances to combustible surfaces, a non-combustible hearth and a proper heat shield behind the unit are all part of a compliant installation. We handle any core drilling and brickwork ourselves, so one team finishes the job.

What it costs and what it saves

Pricing depends on the unit, the flue run and whether an existing chimney can be reused. A freestanding closed combustion unit with a straight flue through a pitched roof is the most affordable route; a built-in insert with cladding and a new chimney breast costs more.

Against those costs, wood use typically drops by half to two thirds compared with an open fireplace, and the heat reaches the whole living area rather than just the person sitting closest to it.
